About these data
This page contains a range of data that the LSC has. It represents information that we are most regularly asked for. In order to allow equal access we are publishing it on this website.
We expect these statistics will be of most interest to:
- respondents to the Carter consultation paper
- those seeking to understand the nature of the market that they operate in.
These data are in PDF format under Related Documents. It is possible to manipulate the statistics to get a deeper analysis using Adobe Acrobat software. Please see the How to use PDF documents page for more details.
We will publish all data relating to legal aid on this website. We will expand the current criminal sections to include Crown Court data shortly.
Police station data
You can view costs information for each police station where a claim was made between April 2005 and March 2006. The police stations have been grouped together into their constituent criminal justice areas.
These data are useful for understanding average costs at the named police stations against the overall average for that police station. They can help provide information about local markets.
All individual police stations are split by region. Each station has three tables showing:
- Table 1: the volume and value of duty solicitor and own client work combined
- Table 2: the volume and value of duty solicitor work only
- Table 3: the volume and value of own client work only.
Magistrates’ court data
You can view costs information for each magistrate court where a claim was made between April 2005 and March 2006. The courts have been grouped together into their constituent criminal justice areas.
These data are useful for understanding average costs at the named magistrates’ courts against the overall average for that court. They can help provide information about local markets.
All magistrates’ courts are split by region. Each court has two tables showing:
- Table 1: the volume and value of representation order work
- Table 2: the volume and value of court duty work.
Duty Solicitor scheme data
You can view lists of Duty Solicitor schemes and the names of participating firms across England and Wales. It represents information that has been recently asked for under the FOI Act 2000. In order to allow equal access we are publishing it on this website.
Duty Solicitor Schemes are split by the LSC regions. Each scheme has two tables showing:
Civil data
Civil legal aid information information on case costs is now available for:
- Child Care Proceedings
- TFF replacement
- Mental health
- NfP agencies
This is available under Related Documents. Each document contains notes explaining the data.
We will shortly be publishing information on private family cases and Immigration and Asylum. This will also be available from this page.
This information is intended to aid an understanding of the average costs of legal aid cases, and to help inform responses to the current consultation on the Carter proposals: Legal Aid: a sustainable future.
