Legal aid in the Midlands
This area has a population of over 15.2 million and includes 18 counties and 132 local authorities (including unitary authorities).
In 2006 the employment rate in the West Midlands was 73.8% - below the UK average.
In 2006 average gross weekly earnings for full-time employees on adult rates in the East Midlands were £470 for males and £358.50 for females.
This is 4% and 7% respectively below UK levels.
Population density in the eastern region was highest in Luton with 4,265 people per km2 in 2005. This is one of the highest outside London.
Our work in this area
During the year 2006/2007 over 160,000 people in the region were helped by civil legal aid face-to-face acts of assistance.
We helped many more via telephone advice.
We work with over 2,800 high-quality solicitors and advice agencies across the region to provide publicly funded legal advice.
