The LSC is working with legal aid lawyers to reduce carbon footprints! (Nottingham)
04 June 2007
In Nottinghamshire, the majority of all work undertaken by legal aid lawyers is online, thanks to the electronic billing service, LSC Online, set up by the Legal Services Commission (LSC) in 2005.
The system allows lawyers to submit their monthly civil and criminal controlled work claims using a secure website.
The figures showing the percentage of legal aid lawyers who submit all work online are as follows:
- Ashfield: 72.72%
- Bassetlaw: 54.54%
- Broxtowe: 71.43%
- Gedling: 83.33%
- Mansfield: 76.47%
- Newark and Sherwood: 57:14%
- Nottingham: 64.58%
Legal aid lawyers are replacing the most frequently used forms with LSC Online, in order to improve efficiency and help combat global warming.
Switching to LSC Online will save a minimum of 1.8 million sheets of paper – equivalent to 240 trees – per year, as well as save 150 tonnes of carbon a year – which is equivalent to taking 50 cars off the road!
Lin Storey, Regional Director of the Legal Services Commission, said: “At the LSC we work in partnership with skilled and dedicated advice providers to ensure that people get the help they need.
By working with our providers in this way, to reduce the impact we have on the environment, we are not only ensuring that best use is made of taxpayers’ money, but we are also doing our bit to help the environment.
I am delighted that legal aid lawyers in Nottinghamshire are committed to the environment and delivering better services to vulnerable people.
If all legal aid lawyers could work electronically today, a minimum of 1.8 million sheets of paper would be saved in replacing the most common legal aid paper forms with the electronic system.”
As well as the environmental benefits, electronic working will also mean reduced administration costs for both the LSC and our providers.
