About the Midlands region
Our Midlands regional office manages criminal and civil legal aid for a population of over 15.2 million.
The region includes 18 counties and 132 local authorities (including unitary authorities).
Our providers in the Midlands
During the year 2006/2007 over 160,000 people in the region were helped by civil legal aid face-to-face acts of assistance. We helped many more via telephone advice.
We work with over 2,800 high-quality solicitors and advice agencies across the region to provide publicly funded legal advice.
In facts and figures
Statistics for the Midlands show:
- in Q2 2006 the employment rate (for people of working age) in the West Midlands was 73.8% - below the UK average
- in Apr 06 average (median) gross weekly earnings for full-time employees on adult rates in the East Midlands were £470 for males and £358.50 for females - 4% and 7% respectively below the UK levels
- population density in the Eastern region was highest in Luton with 4,265 people per km2 in 2005 - one of the highest outside London.
