Public Bodies Bill – LSC’s future status

14 October 2010

LSC included in October 14 Written Ministerial Statement on Public Bodies Review Programme

The Legal Services Commission is one of the 679 Non-Departmental Public Bodies (NDPBs) which have are included in today’s Written Ministerial Statement on the Public Bodies Review Programme.

As a result of this review, the LSC will no longer be an NDPB, but will instead become an Executive Agency of the Ministry of Justice. This means the LSC will be abolished in its present form and reconstituted as an Executive Agency.

The LSC’s future status was previously set out in July in a written answer to a Parliamentary Question from Lord Bach:

QUESTION:

Lord Bach: “To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether they intend to introduce legislation in this session to turn the Legal Services Commission into an executive agency.”

ANSWER:

Minister of State (Lord McNally):

“The Government agrees with the previous administration’s commitment to replace the Legal Services Commission with an executive agency of the Ministry of Justice believing that this will strengthen accountability for and control of the legal aid fund.“
