What are Community Legal Service grants?
The CLS Grants Budget allows the LSC to consider ad hoc funding proposals from a variety of organisations. We can award funding to projects and activities that do not necessarily provide direct advice solely to eligible clients.
Following a detailed consultation and review of the future of the scheme we concluded the grants are an effective mechanism for funding complimentary services that could not be funded from other sources.
However the criteria used to determine awardees needed to be more consistent with the CLS Strategy and current LSC corporate objectives.
We decided to:
- continue the scheme for three years
- increase the funding to a maximum of £1 million/yr for three years.
Who have we awarded grants too?
Nine grants were awarded. Five were to new bidders and four to existing grant holders:
- Advice Services Alliance
- Law Centres Federation
- Law Works
- Royal Courts of Justice CAB
- Connie & Albert Taylor Trust
- Public Law Project
- Matrix Chambers
- Disability Law Service
- Ben Hoare Bell.
How does the process work?
The tender process was open for applications for one month (14 January - 15 February 2008).
Information for Applicants was available on this website and providers were alerted to the bidding process via letters to the representative bodies and an advert in The Gazette.
We received 38 applications. The combined total value of these was almost £14m over three years, well in excess of the £1m per annum that was available.
