The Access to Justice Act 1999
The Access to Justice Act created the Legal Services Commission (LSC) to establish, maintain and develop:
- a Community Legal Service (launched 1 April 2000)
- a Criminal Defence Service (launched 2 April 2001).
The LSC replaced the Legal Aid Board.
The Access to Justice Act is in the Documents panel.
Acts, Regulations and Orders
The Access to Justice Act prompted a number of Regulations and Orders.
Regulations are rules or directives issued by a government agency. They often have the force of law.
Orders are a written direction of a court or judge.
Directions and Arrangements
The Lord Chancellor issued a number of requirements following the Access to Justice Act about how the LSC should distribute legal aid and advice.
