New pay scheme for legal aid at the police station

22 June 2007

Reforms to be implemented in October

We have now published the outcome of our consultation on Police Station reforms. The reforms will be implemented in October this year.

Legal aid providers will be paid under a fixed fee structure for advice provided to clients at the police station. The level of the fixed fee will depend on the area in which the work is delivered. There will be an "escape mechanism" for the most serious or time consumming cases.

We have not made any significant changes to areas that solicitors currently work within.

The fees will help to prepare legal aid providers for competitive tendering in 2008.

Decisions on the other proposals consulted on will be delayed until the outcome of the further consultation on duty solicitor slot allocation.
