Changes to travel time recording from 1 July

19 June 2008

Recording travel time no longer required for police stations and magistrates courts

From 1 July, providers will no longer need to record the cost of travel time in police station cases, unless the cases are classed as ‘exceptional’.  The same change will apply to magistrates’ court travel time recording.

Waiting time should continue to be recorded, however, in all cases.

Until 1 July, the cost of travel should continue to be recorded in police station cases.

After 1 July it will no longer need to be, unless you wish to claim an exceptional case fee, in which case you can include the costs of travel in your calculation.

From 1 July, there will be a similar change in magistrates’ court cases in the 16 ‘main urban areas’ – providers won’t need to record travel time there as it’s already included in the fee, as is waiting. Outside these 16 areas, providers should continue to record the costs of travel and waiting as these will continue to be claimable.

We're retaining waiting time recording after 1 July in all cases because it helps us to see how different court and police station practices affect providers.
