Working towards efficiency

Our Criminal Justice System Initiatives team ensures that we work effectively with the Ministry of Justice and our criminal justice system (CJS) partners at a national and local level.

We are working to:

ensure efficiency across the whole criminal justice system
improve value for money for spending on criminal legal aid
build confidence in the criminal justice system.

Improving value for money

Our three key approaches are:

helping to ensure that the criminal justice system works as efficiently and as cost effectively as possible: eg reducing waiting time in the police stations and courts for defence solicitors
ensuring that the impact on the legal aid fund of proposed changes to the CJS are fully costed and considered by the Ministry of Justice and other government departments and agencies
exploring other opportunities (such as diversion) that can offer substantial long term savings by investing relatively small resources in the short term.
