Press Release

Help for vulnerable Camden women and children

19 October 2005

Thanks to just over £60,000 of funding from the Legal Services Commission, Camden Women’s Aid have launched a 2 year pilot project, which is likely to help around 900 women experiencing family problems.

The funding will allow Camden Women’s Aid to provide legal advice and information to women who are experiencing, or have experienced, domestic violence.  The service will help women and their children access the advice, information and support services they need.

Angela Lake-Carroll, Director of Children and Family Services at the Legal Services Commission, said: “Research has shown that approximately one in five people experiencing family problems, such as domestic abuse, will seek advice from a source other than a solicitor.  I’m sure this project will be successful in reaching many women in Camden who find themselves in difficult family situations and will help protect their rights and deal with their problems.”

Mary Mason, Director of Camden Women’s Aid, said: “The Legal Services Commission’s funding will enable us to provide an entry point to women fleeing domestic violence to the services needed to help resolve their problems.  We are very excited about developing this pilot and the potential it will bring to improving outcomes for women and their children.”

The Community Legal Service which brings together networks of funders (e.g. local authorities) and suppliers of legal and advice services into partnerships to provide the widest possible access for people needing legal help in order to deal with their problems.

The Criminal Defence Service which provides services to enable people accused of crimes to defend themselves.
